Sources and licensing
“Every claim traceable to its source” is an assertion until it is a page. This is the page.
§ 1What this site draws on
Global Oil and Gas Extraction Tracker, Global Energy Monitor, March 2026 Release.
Field-level rows. Coordinates arrive as text in this release and are parsed to numbers; the parse is checked against an independent reader before anything is published. This release publishes no Arabic name for any field referencing Syria.
Global Oil and Gas Plant Tracker, Global Energy Monitor, January 2026 Release.
Unit-level rows. Every unit of a plant carries the plant’s coordinate, so units are counted individually and drawn once per location. Unit labels in the published workbook were coerced to dates by the spreadsheet software before distribution; we do not read or display them, and use the publisher’s unit identifier instead.
Global Gas Infrastructure Tracker, Global Energy Monitor, November 2025 Release.
Read from the GeoPackage distribution, which is the only one carrying route geometry. Routes are clipped to the map frame segment by segment, so a route that leaves the frame and returns is never joined by a line the source does not contain.
Global Oil Infrastructure Tracker, Global Energy Monitor, 2026-07-21 corrected release.
The corrected release is used. Some records in this tracker carry no published route geometry at all; they are counted in the holdings and are absent from the map, which the map caption states.
Syria — Subnational Administrative Boundaries (COD-AB), OCHA, v02.
The administrative boundary and place gazetteer. Supplies the national outline, the administrative hierarchy and the populated-place records. The publisher’s own generalisation places a small number of settlements outside the sub-district their record names; we keep the publisher’s coding as given and state the defect rather than silently correcting it.
Natural Earth, Admin 0 – Countries, 1:50m.
Context land only. Every country other than Syria is merged into one unlabelled shape with no internal borders, so the map takes no position on any boundary between Syria’s neighbours. Syria itself is never drawn from this source.
§ 2What this site does not load
An exclusion list is part of a sourcing statement. These are excluded by policy, not by oversight.
- Conflict event data
- Excluded. This is an infrastructure and economy product; conflict-event tracking is outside its scope and would import a security frame we refuse.
- Commercial high-resolution imagery archives
- Excluded under their terms and under our own rule against security and targeting layers.
- Hosted analysis platforms
- Excluded, so that every derived figure can be reproduced from files we hold under a licence we have read.
- OpenStreetMap-derived geometry
- Kept in isolated storage under its share-alike licence and not used on this site, so no obligation leaks into work that does not carry it.
- Paywalled and subscription products
- Never harvested. No login or paywall is circumvented, robots directives are respected, and our crawler identifies itself.
- Leaked or unlawfully obtained material
- Never ingested, in any form, from any party.
§ 3Known defects, as measured
These are defects in the published sources, measured on every build rather than repeated from anywhere. The record is kept as given; the defect is stated. The coincident-coordinates note stays on the coverage frame, where the map it explains is drawn.
21 of the oil and NGL pipeline records in the regional scope carry no published route geometry, and 38 of the gas records. They are counted in the coverage frame and are absent from the map.
48 of 8,007 populated places fall outside the sub-district their own record names: 46 by under one kilometre, the largest by 3.0 km. This is the publisher’s own boundary generalisation, and the record is kept as given.
2 mapped locations sit up to 347 m outside the published national boundary, on the coast. Both figures approximate the same shoreline and coastal plants sit at the waterline; the published coordinate is kept rather than moved to fit the outline.
§ 4The site itself
This site makes no third-party request at runtime. There are no analytics, no cookies, no embeds, no content delivery network and no runtime libraries. Typefaces are IBM Plex, served from this origin under the SIL Open Font Licence 1.1; the licence text ships alongside them.
- The machine-readable coverage frame is published at /data/coverage.json. A claim of provenance that a machine cannot read is a claim you have to take on trust.
